It seems to simply be a specifier of sleeve-length, so the term t-shirt must not be related to the sleeves. No, the dictionary says that it means a short-sleeve or sleevel… I don’t consider it a contradiction in terms. A short sleeve tee shirt can be worn as an undershirt or a polo short w/o a collar. A long sleeve tee shirt can also be worn as an long sleeve undershirt or a polo shirt w/o a collar. The only difference is it is long sleeve vs. short sleeve.
