By the end of the school year, we went on school break and came back like it never happened. In high school, more girls started wearing it. Once puberty hits, it’s all awkward between guys and girls, being aware of each other’s change in bodies and looking at them sexually, made a lot of girls self conscious and shy. Guys, too. Taking up the ‘veil’ or a small head scarf and wearing long sleeves, takes the mind away from thinking about how we look. Girls feel more like equals to one another, and united, rather than competing for attention. I knew I was slightly overweight or athletic, but nobody could tell under my clothes. No bad hair days, no fat days. Plus, if we all ‘look’ alike on the outside, the boys could only judge us by our insides/personality/character. It feels quite empowering.
